Pygmy Shrew (Suncus etruscus), Vipava Valley

Description: The pygmy shrew is the smallest known mammal on our planet. With a body length of 5cm, weight of 2g, body temperature of 43 ºC and a heartbeat that can compare to a racing car engine, this animal is a unique phenomenon. Regardless of its weight, this animal has an apetite without comparison - the daily portion of the insects it eats weighs three times more than its body. Despite such a fast rhythm of living, this little predator of insects and other Arthropoda can live to an age of one year and a half. We cannot even try and compare these numbers with the human rhythm of life for they prove useless. Until recently, this species of shrew in Slovenia has only been found in the Sečovlje saltworks and on rare locations along the coast, but not long ago it has also been found in the Vipava Valley which only proves the thermophilic geographical position and climate of the valley.
