7 SOURCES OF THE VIPAVA RIVER

7 SOURCES OF THE VIPAVA RIVER
Beautiful, sunny and warm days invite you to spring wanderings and explorations. This is the time when we like to go for a walk in nature or decide on a trip to nearby or  more distant places. Vipava and its surroundings offer us a lot of hidden corners and ideas for a short break and exploration. Do you know what the town of Vipava was named after? Of course, after the river Vipava, which is a great natural landmark here, because these kinds of springs can't be found anywhere else in Europe. Karst water comes to the surface from larger cracks and crevices at the contact between the rocks, which build Nanos.

Did you know that the river Vipava has as many as seven permanent springs? They are all located right here in the town of Vipava. Have you visited them yet? The mainsprings of the river Vipava are Podskala and the double spring Podfarovž, which are located only a few meters away from the Main Square, behind Lanthieri's mansion.

The southernmost is the Pri kapelici spring, followed by the Pod lipco spring, which is covered by a water supply system. The third group of springs is located in the central canopy of Vipava springs. In the southern part of this, water drips from numerous cracks and fences under the house and gardens, a larger spring is just behind the former mill.

The most abundant spring is just below the entrance to the artificial tunnel of the Vipava Cave, the so-called spring in the Cave. At the central springs of Vipava, called Podskala, in addition to the two mentioned springs, waters also flow through two impassable crevices behind the castle. When the water levels are at their highest, a series of small jets appear from rock crevices above the springs.

The springs of the river Vipava do not dry up even in the greatest drought. In the  summer, the Vipava river can be a real refreshment. It is also very well known among fishermen, as many species of fish live in its waters.

The springs of Vipava are protected as a natural monument, as they are part of a wider area of natural sights and cultural and historical monuments of Vipava.

This charming little town is completely intertwined with karst springs and riverbeds, over which many bridges are built. Vipava therefore adopted the nickname of Slovenian Venice.

While discovering the springs, you will also get to know the other beauties of this city. Vipava has an interesting old town, where in addition to nature, there are also major city attractions.
